Diversity Through Different Time Periods(Project 5/Field Trip 6 Reaction)

I chose this theme because it shows the different types of art from various artists during the time periods.For each artist, they illustrate their ideas and thoughts about art through their works. For example, the painting, " Corridor in the Asylum" by Vincent Van Gogh depicts the asylum Van Gogh stayed at for twelve month. This painting shows what he saw in his mind, while he was in there for treatment. Another painting is "Mirror" by Stanley William Hayter which shows the face of a woman in a fan, while her body is an instrument or an object. In my opinion, this represents how society objectifies women as tools, instead of actual human beings.The last painting i liked was "Circus Slideshow by George Seurat. This painting illustrates popular entertainment by showing a circus as a slideshow to promote people to buy tickets.This painting gives a fun, pleasant feeling because it shows people having fun and enjoying the company of the people around them. Based on this, all these paintings depict the different ideas and thoughts from each artist throughout the different time periods.

                                           "Performance Art at The Whitney Museum"
           During our trip to the Whitney Museum, we viewed the exhibit, " Rituals of Rented Island" which displayed artists who participated in the performance art scene from 1970-1980. For many artists, they made work that referenced social and cultural issues during that time period. Also,many of the art displayed there illustrated the experiences the artists went through during that time. In addition, three pieces that spoke to me were art pieces made by artist Vito Acconci  because he challenged the way to get inspiration.
          In Vito Acconci's "Proximity Piece", the artist Acconci is following viewers in order to force himself into his or her space during his experience. When it comes to this art piece, the artist wants to explore human relationships with themselves and those around them by trying to break down the barriers. Unlike other artists, Acconci interacts with the audience to get certain reactions from them and aimed to deconstruct the boundaries set by society. Additionally, this piece reminds me of the social idea that people want to understand other people by experiences.Based on this, i really liked this piece because it shows how an artist  interacts with his audience in a different way to understand where they come from.
         Another art piece by Acconci called " Performance Test", the artist sat on a chair and stared at each members of the audience for fifteen minutes straight. Based on this, this art piece is similar to "Proximity Piece" because they both involve audience interaction and observation from the artist. For the artist, he wanted to capture the audience's movements and interaction between them to understand their relationships. Due to this, his observations in both art pieces show that he uses art to interact with himself, the people around him and his environment.
        Finally, the last art piece is called "In Adaptation Studies (Soap and Eyes)", in this piece Acconci films himself hitting himself in the face with  a plate of soup, and lets the soap drip from his skin. Due to this, the artist forces himself out of his comfort zone by connecting with it physically by defining and expanding its limits. Based on this, the artist is examining himself by putting his body under pressure to understand his limitations as a person.In my opinion, i wouldn't go to that extremes but i admire him because he pushed the boundaries to achieve what he wanted to achieve with his art.
  Overall, i liked the experience of going to the Whitney Museum and seeing the different art work of performance art. It gave me a new perspective of the time period and the struggling artists during that time. in addition, i have an admiration for the artist Vito Acconci because he pushed the boundaries and got his audience to react to his art pieces.

LES Galleries Reaction

During our trip to the Les galleries, I noticed there were differences in the galleries from the galleries in Chelsea because they had different forms of galleries. For instance, many of the galleries had different themes such as photography, abstract, and many others. I liked the galleries in Chelsea because the galleries were more bolder and out there. However, the Les galleries had good aspects such as using film as a form.of art was very creative.
One gallery in the Les gallery that I liked was the "Anastasia Photo gallery" because it illustrates different photos from artists, time periods, and places. I liked this gallery because it was creative in using photography in telling a story and a work of art at the same time. The gallery drew me in because of the way the photographs were placed and the facial expressions on the people. In addition, it had a similar feel to one of the galleries in Chelsea because it challenges the perspectives of different people.
Also, two other galleries I liked on the Les were "Scaramouche" because it showed individual videos and film-making to illustrate their work. In addition, it was very different from Chelsea's galleries because it was more exposed and vulnerable.The final gallery that I liked on the Les was the "Allegra Laviola gallery"because it showed art that had historical background which is original, since most galleries in Chelsea didn't do that. Based on this, both of the galleries caught my attention because they each showed different aspects of life such as m
the power of films and hardships.
Overall, the galleries in the Les were original because they used different ideas and incorporated into the galleries. The galleries in Chelsea were great too because they showed morals and messages in their galleries. I liked the film- making gallery because it incorporated both art and film together to create something new. Due to this, both the galleries in Chelsea and the Les are great in their own way and each contribute to their crafts. It was great to see different ideas come to life from different perspectives.

                  During our trip to the Moma, i saw various design exhibits and galleries which were from different artists.In the galleries, there were two types of objects there, objects that are made in the real world and objects that are less practical. Based on this, the study of functionality in design is called Ergonomics.Due to this, there were two different works of art from the galleries that had "high functionality"and two works that had "low functionality"which caught my attention because they were so different from each other. Both works represented different ideas about the galleries and perspectives.
               The first work of art that i found had "high functionality" was called, " Honey- Pop Armchair" by Tokujin Yoshioka made in 2001. i chose this work of art because it is something that is simple and can be used everyday. Also, it is a work made entirely of paper which is unique in its own way. In addition,  it plays upon the idea of an object and it's material used in an abstract way. I liked this gallery because it shows work from different cultures which shows diversity around the world.
              The second work of art is called, " Oxygen House Project"by Douglas Darden. The art work shows "high functionality" because of the different layers it has and the material used on the painting.For instance, the work is done in pencil, ink crayon, charcoal, and paper.This work is unique to me because it shows a narrative of architecture by using  diverse elements like a puzzle. In addition, i liked that each work has a story because it shows that the work of art has culture. I would categorize the works as Diverse because they each show background on the artist and their experiences.
             The third work of art that has "low functionality" is "The Honeycomb Vase"by Tomas Gabzinii because of the way it is displayed on the surface. I believe it has low functionality because it doesn't have a purpose except to attract bees. In addition, the video showed on the display does not prove it can do much except attract bees. Also,the vase is too simple because there does seem to be anything special about it. Based on this, the work of art has low functionality and it doesn't appeal to me in my opinion.
 The fourth piece of art that has low functionality is called "The Pigs Wings Project"by Oron Catts. It has low functionality because it portrays an unrealistic false hope that pigs will someday fly. Also, it doesn't have any story or background why people would want it to be a reality.In my opinion, it seems that people wanted to prove that science has come a long way since the beginning.Based on this, the fourth piece of art has low functionality because of its unrealistic portrayal of pigs and science.
Overall,the artworks that I saw at the Moma had both artwork has contained high functionality and high functionality in their designs. Also, the artwork each had their different ideas throughout the different artists. Due to this,I appreciated the ideas and personal experiences from the artwork that some had while others didn't.

This story caught by attention because it shows how people who seem scary can actually be helpful when it comes to difficult situations such as child abuse. I loved that the people uses their biker jackets as a positive thing for the kids to wear for them to feel safe. The biker jacket represents the safety that it provides for kids who are abused because it makes them feel safe. Also, the red marks represents invisible scars that each kid who are abused have inside themselves, but it makes them stronger as people. This story shows that children can see that being abused is never their fault and they can learn to overcome their situations by seeking help.

Chelsea Galleries Reaction

                       While visiting the Chelsea galleries, there was one exhibition that i liked and another one that i didn't like. The exhibition that i liked was the Hauser & Wirth gallery which showed works from artist Matthew Day Jackson.This gallery showed dark collage paintings that dealt with issues of the body, morality, and the spiritual. i liked Jackson's work because it shows the flaws and imperfections of humanity which many people choose to ignore. For instance, the collage painting " Reclining Nude" by Matthew Day Jackson shows a spirit being torn by discovery and destruction because of the skeletons inside them. Also, the different images and materials all show a sense of unity in the painting. In my opinion, the skeletons represent regret because of the spirit's mistakes based on the different body parts. In addition, the painting "Inside/Outside" by Matthew Day Jackson shows a human form in numerous dissected places. it shows a man's face bring shown inside out. On the inside, there are grey vessels on it which shows emptiness in the man's body. Also, the color grey means that the person may be dull or not be an outgoing person, it says something about the personality. Based on this, i would put this artist's work on display because it shows boldness on the idea of imperfections.
                 On the other hand, the exhibition that i didn't like was the Matthew Marks Gallery which showed works by Anne Threshold. The reason i didn't like this gallery is because the sculptures were plain and there was no form of motion or emotion. For instance, the sculpture " Grant" by Anne Truitt shows a plain white board  over a beige one. When i looked at the exhibition, i couldn't feel any emotion towards it at all because it was too simple for me. I believe the author's intention was for it to be simple and that can work for a painting but it is difficult to show that in a sculpture.Due to this, the painting " Jaunt" by Anne Truitt shows  a plain wooden rectangle with white and yellow lines on the bottom.This sculpture did not grab my attention because i couldn't feel anything from it. i feel that if there were more objects in the sculpture, then i wouldn't have felt something.Based on this, i would put this artist's work in storage because it wouldn't fit into the idea of imperfection for my collection.

                                         “Art and Identity: The Museum of Modern Art 
                                   
                                    For a person, their identity can be shaped by different people in their lives, their environment, or their experiences in life. Most artists use identity in their artwork because it's a way to tell their story about their struggles and experiences for the audience to understand their paintings. Based on this, there are many ways that an artist can tell their story through different perspectives such as personal, cultural, and historical. When it comes to paintings, a person can interpret them in numerous ways whether it is personal, historical, or cultural it depends on the perspective of the viewer. Due to this, a painting can have multiple meanings that tell about the artist's identity based on their experiences.
                                   In the photograph," Joe Reeves", by Philip Lorna Dicorca the picture shows a man standing in front of a mirror looking straight forward at someone. This picture is personal because of the reflection that the man is seeing, he's unhappy about something in his life. For instance, the facial expression on his face shows that he is insecure about himself and his body image.Body image is an important issue for both men and women but most people look at the women's perspective, instead of both.For the artist, he wanted to show on a personal level that men can get insecure and vulnerable the same way women do.
                                 In the painting, "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth a young women is shown crawling to a house trying to reach it no matter what.The women in the painting has polio and she was a neighbor of the artist who suffered from the disease during that time. Also, polio is a muscular disorder that leaves a person paralyzed from the waist down. During the 1940s, polio wasn't known as a sickness because many doctors could not diagnosis it yet because of the lack of medicine. For the artist, he was inspired by his neighbor's spirituality despite her condition because she showed that she still wanted to live her life.
                               On a cultural perspective, the painting " Rogues' Gallery" by Charles Butchfield has a garden that has dying sunflowers because the artist was always inspired by nature. In the painting, the artist uses watercolors as his medium to illustrate the flowers and the shadows that surround them. The culture of the painting is that the term Rogues's Gallery is usually used as a pictograph that shows people who are suspected of crimes. However, in the painting the artist decides to take a different approach of the concept that existed during New York and other places as well. Based on this, the cultural aspect is used to it's advantage and the artist's vision is expressed in a new way.
                              Overall, a person's identity can be based on different factors in their life. Through art, artists are able to show their identity through the paintings they do based on their perspective. For an artist, personal, cultural, and historical perspective is important because it allows an artist to tell a story through  different angles. Due to this,  paintings are used for artists to tell their stories and to give viewers a variety of perspectives from their own experiences.

Good Art vs Bad Art

Good Art Vs Bad Art

   There are many pieces of art that i consider good art because of an artist's overall message that it is trying to come across to a viewer. For instance, a painting should able to have some form of expression in order for us the viewers to understand the message of the painting. Based on this, a painting is good art when it shows that the artist has proven its point by showing people their perspective. In my opinion, good art means that there is a story that the artist wants to tell us about using images and figures from their eyes. Finally, good art means that the artist has expressed their feelings about the subject in an honest and beautiful way.

On the other hand, some pieces of art may be considered bad art but to me i consider it subjective because it depends on a person's perspective on the art piece. For instance, it is more honest if a person states their opinion on an art piece based on what they think, instead of what other people think about it. Due to this, i believe there is no such thing as bad art unless it is based on a person's personal opinion of the art piece. For art piece to be in an art gallery means that it is considered real art no matter where it comes from or who paints it.Furthermore, an art piece should be acknowledged and respected whether or not it is good or bad art.
